In this Story Kota, we will watch a video that Tuula and I put together, in which she shares how she found herself on an unexpected journey into creativity.

Despite her vivid imagination and a love of photography, Tuula Ahde had never considered herself a creative person. But that belief slowly changed when she followed something that occupied her fascination in a way she couldn’t fully explain…ice.

Her macro ice photographs are full of mystery and magic. What makes them so powerful is Tuula’s deep connection to the ice and the worlds she finds in it. And while her images demonstrate technical skill from a decade spent developing her unique process (using old phones and clip-on lenses), it’s her relationship with the ice and the thoughts and emotions that underpin her creative process that make her work sparkle.

Ice allowed what was inside to make itself known. Its abstract and unpredictable nature allows each image to carry and express a unique story. Some hold tangible landscapes and faces within, which speak to people in different ways.

A Symbolic Creative Process

The symbolism of ice and Tuula’s approach to working with it are also significant parts of this journey, which has so powerfully wedded creativity and self-discovery. There is something beautiful in her depiction of the process of creating the ice, breaking it, pouring hot water over it to expose cracks that become the soft, delicate, fleeting moments where beauty emerges. She illuminates the ice with setting suns and old headlamps, noticing the big differences that tiny changes in weather, temperature, and lighting can make.
