True Colours (Season Theme)

What do you think of when you hear the words “True Colours“?

Exposing True Colours

To say that something or someone has shown their true colours is a familiar metaphor for the revelation of something previously concealed.

The onlooker might have been unable to spot them. The source might have been deliberately trying to hide them. Perhaps to deceive others into believing their colours are different. Or maybe for fear of what people would think if they saw the truth.

Over the next two months in The Haven, we will explore this theme from different angles. The literal, the creative, the metaphorical, and anywhere in between.

We will use it to invite accidental creativity as we explore what helps and hinders us in recognising and expressing our true colours, and how our sensitivity can help us see and bring out the true colours in the places and people around us. This might mean illuminating the space required for others to creatively thrive in and be themselves. Or it might mean scratching off the deceptive facades, deliberately designed to misdirect perceptions away from who they are deep down, in order to exert power and extract profit.

Colours Change

True colours, when lived, are not static. They are dynamic. The colours of a season are rich and varied across sources, and as those sources move through time, the colours transform, reflecting their engagement with the environment and conditions. In many contexts, true colours are not some pre-formed essence that is exposed, but rather a reflection of an ongoing relationship that emerges and morphs with an asymmetric rhythm.

Colours carry deep-seated associations in many parts of life. They underpin connections we make to our allegiances (national flags, team colours, etc.), they represent iconic recognisable brands, and they are baked into our emotional vocabulary (feeling blue, seeing red, green with envy).

Coming To Our Senses

We will put together a 16-page zine that will be revealed at our watch party on Sunday, 3rd May 2026. Coming To Our Senses reflects our conversations and creative meanderings from unpicking and unpacking topics related to the theme.

There are so many potential angles we can take with true colours.

True Colours – Topic Cards

Topic cards help us identify different angles and areas for exploring the theme. These inspire our Journal Circle and Courtyard meetings, and I will use them to inspire questions and prompts for my own creative practice. You can follow along in the activity feed (#TrueColours) and on Instagram.
