Exploring the Theme: Belonging

“To feel as if you belong is one of the great triumphs of human existence, especially to sustain a life of belonging and to invite others into that same place of groundedness and ease.” – David Whyte

This issue of Coming To Our Senses brings together some of what we’ve been reflecting on, including:

  • An introduction reflecting on the recent news that an agreement has been reached between the United Kingdom and Mauritius about allowing citizens to return home to the Chagos Islands after the brutal expulsion of the 1960s and 1970s to make way for a military base.
  • Salah Oudjane’s refusal to leave his café in La Castellane, France, amid a wave of urban redevelopment in 2011, was not just an act of defiance against developers—it was a stand for the community.
  • What is the cost of trying to fit into a world that thrives off our feelings of alienation? We use an episode of Black Mirror to frame this question.
  • We have contributions from Zoie, Barbra, and Ania, who bring beautiful perspectives on this theme.

Through words, images, and sounds, we invite you to engage with your sensitivity, imagination, and curiosity.
