What Happens When The Flow Stops? (Journal Prompt)

Currents are flowing through, around, and between us. Right now. They sustain and animate the world in ways we don’t always notice. Water, electricity, oxygen, internet, sound, power, sight, taste, smell, etc, flow into our spaces and bring life to the objects around us. What happens when the flow stops?

In this week’s Journal Circle, we took a moment to reflect on what is flowing around us right now. We considered how it brings life to our environment and the benefits of its presence (as well as the potential impact of it disappearing).

What Happens When The Flow Stops?

After a failure with Tuula’s water pump, we spent time reflecting on the flows that sustain and energise our environments, often without conscious awareness. And the impact of those flows stopping.

Questions to Explore:

1. What is one flow (e.g., water, electricity, air, etc.) that brings life to the environment you’re in?
2. As you observe your surroundings, what object are you drawn toward that is animated by this flow?
3. Imagine this flow suddenly stopped. How would its absence affect you, your abilities, and the wider environment?
4. How do you feel reflecting on this?

I recorded the following video after our Journal Circle gathering. I felt inspired to share some reflections on what we explored.

The Journal Circle

The Haven Journal Circle started life after a workshop with Mandy Thompson about starting and maintaining a journal practice. We regularly meet briefly at the end of the week to share how we’re getting on with any practices, habits, and routines we would like to explore through journaling. Because it’s not unusual for time to pass without writing, we spend 5 minutes following a short and straightforward journal prompt, so there is always something to take with us from the week.
