Tiny Steps Towards: What Do You Want To Feel More? (Journal Prompt)

Tiny Steps Towards is for anyone who ever struggles to answer the question, “What do YOU want?”

At times, we become so engrossed in our daily routines, productivity goals, and pleasing others that we lose sight of our own desires. Our values, wants, and emotions can become bottled up and overlooked. Tiny Steps Towards helps you reconnect with your true desires, determine the most effective way to explore them and take small steps to bring them to light for yourself and others.

Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve considered what YOU want. Or perhaps you’d like to be more intentional about bringing them to life without feeling bad about it. Either way, this prompt gives you space to explore these questions in the right way for you.

It’s time to focus on what you want to have and feel more of in your life right now.

Tiny Steps Towards

Tuula led us through this exercise in a Journal Circle gathering. Try these simple steps towards identifying and moving towards what you want.

Step One

Write down one or more things you want to feel. If just one thing comes to mind, take a little time to really describe it. You can also tweak the prompt – if it makes more sense to think about HOW you want to feel or what you want to EXPERIENCE, go for it. This is your list.

Step Two

Think about what you did over the past week that helped you get closer to those feelings or experiences you listed. Even the tiniest steps count. What did you do that made you feel the way you want to feel?

Step Three

Consider what you can do today or next week to keep moving toward those feelings. It’s helpful to think about specific actions, but there’s no need to make rigid plans. Just keep this step in mind.

Bonus Suggestion

Take a moment to consider the physical sensations you want to experience as well. Perhaps you desire the softness of a blanket, the calming weight of your furry friend on your lap, the coolness of a breeze, the comforting heat of ”löyly” (the steam from a sauna) or the refreshing cold of ice cream in your mouth. These sensory experiences can be just as important in fulfilling your emotional needs and what your nervous system desires. Take time, make time, create opportunities.

The Journal Circle

The Haven Journal Circle started life after a workshop with Mandy Thompson about starting and maintaining a journal practice. We regularly meet briefly at the end of the week to share how we’re getting on with any practices, habits, and routines we would like to explore through journaling. Because it’s not unusual for time to pass without writing, we spend 5 minutes following a short and straightforward journal prompt, so there is always something to take with us from the week.
