The Heart of Surrender

This year we are thinking about letting go here in The Haven. A key word that has underpinned this idea as I’ve been exploring it, is ‘surrender’.

On immediate reflection ‘surrender’ can seem like a negative. Especially when you think of it through a competitive mindset or in relation to things like war. This conjures an image of ‘losing’ or allowing the other side to win.

But seen another way, surrender is about ‘giving over’, or giving back. It’s a verb. An action. And most importantly of all, a choice. It’s the act of removing oneself from a source of pain. As much as it might seem like the relinquishing of control, the decision to surrender, is an empowered one. When it is a choice, it’s the difference between quitting and giving up.
