Catalysts for Change
“We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation.” – Jim Rohn
When we hit desperation it might mean we are backed into a corner, at rock bottom, or feeling like we have no choice but to act. This can be a very powerful catalyst for change because we have nothing to lose. So many success stories involve moments like these.
On the flip side, many of these kinds of stories are inspiring too. They provide a change of perspective that tell those of us who haven’t had to live it, that a different way of life is possible. We can be inspired by other people. We can also feel the tug of inspiration within, stemming from all manner of sources.
I remember seeing someone play the drums when I was a kid, and knowing that I simply had to become a drummer. I was obsessed with playing when I was younger. But I never had a moment of desperation which pushed me towards any kind of further success.
However, this year I’ve felt both inspiration and desperation in my search for a coherent way forwards in my life. In the wake of a huge change (my marriage breaking down – not out of choice), I was in a position where I needed to start thinking about a future path forwards on my own. This was totally overwhelming, and also completely liberating.
Then thanks to a rather serendipitous meeting with someone who happened to be a life coach, I was deeply inspired. This led me to realise it was a perfect fit, and scrimp, save, and borrow, to start training to become one myself. And I absolutely love it.
Sometimes the greatest change occurs because of both inspiration AND desperation. When we have been inspired towards something, and are in a position where we finally have no choice but to do it. That can be the perfect storm.
In our conversation you will also learn:
- The power of shame and how we can learn to refuse its power (especially when it stops us from changing)
- The role of vulnerability in self-development and personal growth
- Why we need to care, even if it feels like the world has stopped caring
- How to care without losing our minds
- And much more…
