Insights From Halloween Characters (Journal Prompt)
Because it’s that time of year, this week’s Journal Circle prompt is Halloween-themed. We spent a few minutes imagining how Halloween characters would engage with and react to everyday life.
It can be helpful to see things from different perspectives at times. This prompt is a fun way to consider how other people (or creatures) relate to various things.
Exercises like these provide a playful yet insightful way for highly sensitive people to step outside our immediate reactions and explore them from new angles. By pairing the elements of our week with Halloween characters, we can reflect on our thoughts with curiosity and humour, realising that our initial judgements—while valuable—are not always the whole story.
This approach invites us to pause and consider how another character might see things, helping us detach from automatic responses and discover alternative perspectives. It is a valuable practice for bringing compassion and balance to our self-reflection.
1. Make a List of Halloween Characters
For example, a Ghost, Vampire, Goblin, Witch, Black cat, Impy, Zombie, Wizard, Fairy etc
2. Reflect on the elements of your week
What have been some of the dominant themes over the past seven days? For example, Busyness, Creativity, Frustration, Rest, Rushing, Discovering, Anticipation, Decision-making, Impatience, Calm etc.
3. Connect The Dots
Pick one Halloween character and one element and connect the dots between them in a story, poem, or guide. For example, “A witch’s approach to rushing“, “Sources of frustration for goblins in a human world“, or “A ghost’s guide to rest“.
- What would they focus on?
- How do they experience it?
- What advice would they give?
What do you notice?
Did you notice anything interesting, surprising, or challenging as you did this exercise? Record any observations without self-judgement or criticism.

The Haven Journal Circle started in July 2024 after an inspiring workshop led by Mandy Thompson on how to begin and nurture a journaling practice. Each week, we come together for a cosy 30-minute Zoom chat to share our experiences and encourage one another with the practices, habits, and routines we’re excited to explore and develop. We also spend 5-10 minutes diving into a simple journal prompt together, ensuring there’s always a mark in our journal at the end of the week.
