Book Club | Driving Over Lemons (Chris Stewart)
August 24 @ 6:00 pm BST – 7:00 pm BST
In our August Book Club, we will read Driving Over Lemons by Chris Stewart.
About Driving Over Lemons
Chris describes Driving Over Lemons as the unlikely result of being persuaded, against his better judgement, to write about his family’s life on a remote farm in AndalucÃa. A former sheep shearer with no writing experience, he recounts how he reluctantly took up the task, only to discover he loved the process.
The book chronicles his and his wife Ana’s decision to leave their mundane life near Gatwick Airport for an abandoned farm in Spain’s Alpujarras mountains. Despite the challenges—no proper road, unreliable water, and plenty of mishaps—they embraced the adventure, raising their daughter Chloé and carving out a precarious yet fulfilling existence.
Stewart admits that while readers have called the book “charming,” he aimed to balance the idyllic with the harsh realities: scorching heat, swarms of flies, and the occasional disaster. Yet, at its heart, the story is about finding humour in adversity—a theme he hopes resonates with readers.

What Happens At The Haven Book Club?
Our book club is informal, open, and welcoming (whatever the opposite of terrifyingly pompous is). It doesn’t matter if you are a voracious reader or if this is the first book you’ve read in years.
While it would be lovely to hear from you, there is no pressure for you to actively participate in our discussion. We completely understand if you just want to come along and listen in. These are relaxed gatherings where people are encouraged to be themselves.
Similarly, although you will obviously gain the most from it if you are familiar with the book, you are still more than welcome to join us if you haven’t read it.
